I use many different methods to create whimsical faces, such as basketry, stuffed fabric, paint, crochet, woven tapestry, steel relief sculptures, handmade paper, spun wool, wire, etc. The objective is to create figures that are alive with expressive fun and color and to laugh and enjoy the moment. Very much how children view life when first learning.
My inspiration comes from my love of color and the wonderful diversity of expressions seen in faces and human action. I love eyes and how they showcase the human spirit. I love mouths and how they speak of inner truth. And most of all, I love cheeks because they bring smiles and joy. All together these elements create a fantasy world of laughter, manipulated by various methods of creation.
My life long journey to create whimsical faces led me to obtain a Ph.D. and explore the concept and nature of artistic intelligence, which is a form of spatial intelligence. My research and many publications on the subject can be found with a Google search under
